Unexpected Kernel Mode Trap

After receiving a Unexpected Kernel Mode Trap error on Win2k startup recently my system was down for the count. It sucked, and a search online to the msft site pointed to a hardware issue.

It turns out is was the video drivers, uninstalled the current ATI drivers and reinstalled back to 3.9 and the issue was corrected. Word to the wise, this information could have saved me days of removing hardware and turning services on and off...

He lives!

Sheesh... what timing. I was about to de-bookmark you and assume you were gone, but I decided to try one last time.

And lookie! you're back from the beyond! Hooray!

After that absence, has Isabella started driving yet?

Thankyou. I work as an IT Tech and just got this error on 1 of our major servers. After botting into safemode then uninstalling and reinstalling the VGA drivers the machines back up and working fine. Thankyou again, owe you 1!

Win 2000 Advanced Server Restart & shutdown time all time see Unexpected_Kernel_Mode_Trap / Dumping Physical memory to disk

Thank you for the solution! Same problem after a re-install W2K. About every 3 day's blue screen with same tekst with a count down from 100 till zero. After uninstalling and reinstalling video drivers in VGA safe mode computers works fine again.

Hi,

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the driver in VGA safe mode and the shutdown still occurs after opening up both Firefox and Internet Explorer. Is there anything else I can do???

Well sounds like an internet connection issue. I assume you unistalled FF and that did not help, IE is a bit trickier to remove. One option if you can get online at all is to scan with the new Microsoft spyware beta scanner.

Everything's back to speed again. First, I uninstalled/reinstalled the driver in Safe mode and then unstalled Firefox and replaced with a previous version. Many thanks!

THANK YOU ALL..... after reading here...I remembered that my wonderful CABLE company had offered SHAW SECURE a virus and spyware program which I had installed last week. I uninstalled it and VOILA!!! My computer is back working. DELL had said that I would probably have to reinstall Windows 2000 and possibly format my hard drive (thier answer for anything they don't understannd).

I am having the same problems and took to the advice. Although after the uninstall and reinstall of the driver in safe mode,I keep coming up with the same boot problems. "Kernel Trap"!!!
The Dell system is running a display driver for the systems board "chipset 815". The errors did not occur until I downloaded all the patches for windoze 2000 and installed from the auto update site. Funny how all of MS's fixes cause more problems for the enduser huh? Not to mention all the reboots and time downloading even if you are on a cable network. I will try the firefox uninstall next. In the mean time any suggestions??" Besides shooting bill gates" lol.

Hi again.
Just thought that I would mention that a work around for the extra slow boot of safe mode is to press F8 when the systems boots (win 2000) and choose the VGA mode as opted to safe mode. It boots quicker but I dont know if the safe mode is better for this issue or not. After 10 hours of flatass, I get impatient and want to try and fix other than watching the start up screen.

What does it mean when you get the kernal trap error when you just installed Win2k (actually during the install)? And that's just the start of my problems. I get a different blue screen error everytime (kmode, winlogin, etc)....Windows is just a horrible product. I'm going back to using Fedora.

Changing video drivers didn't work for me. Here is what worked for me: updating Intel Application Accelerator - a hard drive utility for use with motherboards with intel chipsets. Its discussed here: http://service1.symantec.com/support/ent-security.nsf/docid/2002071208532048?OpenDocument&ExpandSection=2&Src=w#_Section2

I, too, started getting UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP BSOD's after turning on the Symantec Anti-Virus auto check, then installing Microsoft's hotfixes. Mark...thanks for the Intel Application Accelerator info...that worked for me, first try!!!!

Thanks again for sharing...

Thanks for this great post! I had this error on my PDC emulator that had all of the FSMO roles!! You saved me!

Thanks again

To Anthony
What was the source for the correct driver you used? How did you find it on the Ati site or where ever you found it?

Thanks Mark for the Intel Application Accelerator fix. This problem happened after doing Windows Updates with my systems with Intel815 chipsets. Saved my bacon as I have 10 of the same systems doing this. Thanks again, you saved my a$$

I thought I was going to lose my job or my sanity this morning when I get a call on my way into work telling me that all of the computers were bluescreening. I get there to see that 15 computer were afflicted with this error. It turns out that upgrading to Symantec Anti Virus Corporate Edition 10 caused this error on the older Pentium 3 systems. The link above to Symantec's website did the trick. Thank you guys for saving my job, and especially my sanity.

Perfect.

I had recently updated a Win2K box here at work with newest Symantec AntiVirus, new Windows Updates, and Office 2003. And it was looping on this same error.

The Intel Application Accelerator fix worked like a charm, here. Thanks a million to Anthony for the thread, and Mark for the specific fix.

It looked quite silly this morning when I 'booted' the Win2000 running in VMWare on top of a SuSE Linux 9.3, and the virtual machine kept on BSOD'ing and rebooting while I was reading my mail on Evolution. From this post, it seems to be a problem with various causes. Is there only one cause? I made no updates; only Win2000 with Office 2000. The only non M$ software is FireFox and avast! I will try some of the suggestions given here today - will keep you posted what happened. ... At least with Linux I can work while playing around with Win2000's BSOD on the same box .... lol ...

I am having the same error Kernel trap but can't boot into safe mode. it will go to the screen but when I choose safe mode it just goes back to my sign in password.

Hi!

I have the same problem with this unexpected kernel trap. What shoul i do to make my pc work again in normal mode?
Thanks a lot...

Yos,
I had this error appear just recently on my Compaq Proliant Server running Win2k Adv Server. I tried uninstalling the ATI driver as these rack servers come with Graphics on-board. It did not change the situation. I finally worked it out to be the VET antivirus service to be the problem in making the kernal hit the wall. I uninstalled and it solved my problem. Just a note to others who may see this error in the future. Try uninstalling any recent drivers or software first as this can cause this problem (incompatibility). Regards, Shiki.
