Google Ads

I have revamped up the Goggle ad placements across the site to see what good it does. I started with the ads when they first came out back in June of 2003. Back then the plan was to pay you your total at the end of the year so by January I had made 10$ and got a check for it. Not a lot but exciting enough. Then they changed it to after you make a 100$ in a month, which I mis-read as that you had to make 100$ in one month to get paid, so I got a little peeved and pulled the ads in I think around June of '04 and then put them back with one on a page here in the upper right in the blue at some point, once I realized they let your total accumulate until you make 100$ and then cut you a check. So that served one ad there on each of the several hundred pages of the site, so it served about 250-300 ads a day and made little to no coin, like maybe 80 cents a week if that.

Now I have placed ads on top of all the individual archive pages as well as the category pages, and really have not given much of a thought to how they make the site look, in fact I have almost tried to make it look bad I think. I have also added these referrals, on which you get $1 when someone on a Windows machine who has never done so before downloads and installs Firefox, fat chance of that happening. And the other referral for the ads is if someone signs up through that link and then makes $100 from Google Ads, they credit me 100$, again fat chance. I have also used the google search function here which serves ads on the results which in turn pay out.

So far the ads served has increased to 600-700 a day and the daily payout total is now from .18 - $2.74 a day, kind of a funny range I think. For instance Wednesday the 14th there were 468 ad impressions and 3 clicks for a total of $2.74, on Thursday there were 553 impression and 3 clicks that totaled .18 cents...

Anyway not going to get rich but a 1$ a day would pay for the hosting. Now if I can just figure out what to right about.

I heart Thanksgiving

I am super excited for Thanksgiving. It is my favorite holiday I believe, good food, football, and family. Our tradition as of late it so head to my 3rd sisters house for late afternoon. I dig it. We bring the bread. Some friends of of ours said that your status in the family is determined by what you are requested to bring to Thanksgiving. Which I agree with, and being the baby in the family I am happy to bring bread, plus I like good bread.

Last night I was reading to Isabella, and Kristin was in the office, which are both upstairs now, when we heard something tumbling down the stairs. Unbelievably it was Michael. At 9 months he gets around great, and is already pulling himself up. We have a gate on the stairs but either we did not close it or he popped it open and rolled down, an amazing to me, 15 stairs and landed on the tile floor. Once I realized it was our boy who I heard rolling down the stairs I rushed down, freaking out, to get the crying boy. But by the grace of god he seems to not even received a scratch, rug burn or bump. I find it completely amazing.

Upgrading to MT 3.2

Looks like it will take me some time to redo the style templates. Overall the update process went smoothly, and I really had no issues at all except for the template updates, and mainly that will just be reviewing the new MT additions to what is used in the templates and updating what I even want in these templates. Though so far I really don't see much use in upgrading, except for TypeKey which I am not even sure I want to use.

Crackheads, Seattle's bourgeois

crackhead.gif

Tuesday of this week I saw our neighborhood "Slack"ers pulled over out across the street from my office window. Pulled over facing the wrong way on the other side of the street with one headlight smashed out and crap falling out of the car, more like exploding or dripping out of the car actually.

I thought, "oh man its on, this should be good". The cop gets out, walks up and I hear:

--

SPD: "You know you ran 2 stops signs back there, across Cherry and the one before that.... and you don't even have a signal I see so you weren't using those... I suppose you don't have your license still either?..."

Crack head: "Man I needed my medication"

SPD: "Man {something I couldn't hear} You know me, we have talked before, we have dealt with you before multiple times..."

Crackhead: Starts talking to his "son" who is walking up and ignoring SPD.

SPD: "Well you know what I am going to do this time? I am just going to give you a warning. Get your license."

Crackhead: Smiles and walks away

SPD: Smiles and drives off

--

WTF? What is going on here? If I ran 2 stop signs, had no lights and shit oozing from my car, I at the VERY LEAST be ticketed for more than one offense, and I have not even talked to the cops about my crack habit or had them bust my door down before.

Is it my family that has to get run over for you to do something SPD? Or who? Or what would be meaningful enough to make you do something? Because we obviously know now it has nothing to do with the law.

Out of Left Field

benzo.jpg

Since it has been awhile since I last posted, I thought I might run through some things quickly:

- Put offers on 3 houses
- Out bid on 3 houses
- Kiristin's Birthday
- Isabella's Birthday
- Designed 7 major site revisions
- Bought a car
- Fathers day weekend Whooping Cough scare.
- Lots a cuppa Javanilla

The last 4 weeks have been not stop with work, really the busiest I have been in the last 5 years I have worked here. I am really looking forward to summer break this year. For one of the first times I have had to turn down personal work that I wanted to do just to manage workload and personal life. A lot of people I talk to seem to be very busy lately, hopefully a good sign for the economy.

Congrats to Arne on home ownership, the Swanson's on Cabin ownership, and Mark and Sachi on Graduating, looking forward to the Red party.

Buying a house in Seattle is becoming very hard for average nerds like myself, Interest Only loans and low interest rates are keeping th price of what people can afford through the roof, everything that we have tried to buy has sold for over 50k over the asking price, which is either a ploy by the LA or shows the fact that the market is as confusing to the agents as us at the moment. Summer don't help none neither.

Kristin will be shooting a bar mitzvah on the 1st and then might check out the ocean for the 4th. Also check out the Weimeraner photo contest onFlickr.

Bell's Update

ear.jpg

After one week of the Bell's Supermom decided to see if acupuncture would help with the pain under her ear and received a prescription from the doctor. It was not good and while she was there it made the pain go away, that night it was the most severe that it had been, so there was not a return visit.

She decided to rest and not take any medication. Once the Bell's seemed to have made little progress in the last 4 weeks, Supermom has decided from the advice of a "Specialist" in this field (meaning someone who knows more than to say "We don't know anything") to begin getting injections of steroid into the middle ear through the ear drum. Makes me cringe, it is actual like flu shot needle in the ear drum, aye aye!, but she says it did not hurt the first time and was only slightly irritating the second. She has two more to go. It is also followed by some pretty severe dizziness for about 30 second, and then a 40 minute lay on her side to keep the steroid in location. So far it seems to be making her face "tighten" on the effected side and it looks as thought the corner of her mouth no longer droops but kind of points up. So there we are at the moment.

Bell's Palsy

kface.jpg

Saturday, 3 days after Michaels birth, Kirstin was diagnosed with Bells Palsy. A nerve condition which makes her unable to move the left half of her face. It is a condition that effects 1 of 5000 people over the course of a lifetime, and very little seems to be known about the cause, though it was discovered in the 1800's by Sir Charles Bell. They say it is caused by trauma to the 7th cranial nerve, and is not permanent in most cases. You can find more information about it on the web of course.

It was something that started with an ear ache and then she woke up about 2 days into it with the numbness of her face. It was a bit shocking at first, so soon after the unexpected home delivery we had and all, but we here happy it was not a stroke after our trip to the ER. It seems there is really no known cause, some say that it is higher in the third trimester of pregnancy but they really do not know, beyond the fact that your body is run down by that point. Since the diagnosis it has been surprising how many people we know who have either a family member of friend that has also had the condition. In almost all the cases there was full recovery for the most part, in some there was partial recovery of the use of the face. The diagnosis today from the neurologist was not great but not dire either, she has lost 90% of the nerves close to her nose and 50-60% in the eye and mouth. This seems to mean that it will be near a 6 month recovery time.

One of the hardest thing for me has been reading the expression on her face, you forget how much communication is non-verbal. As you can see in the picture each side of her face says two different things. One side says, "Ha Ha very funny idiot" and the other says "Don't even think of making that joke again fool or I will crush you little man"

A New Look for '05

ua_tile.gif

I took a little time recently to tweak this site to update the look and some minor structural stuff, I have still have some issues to work out. The comments are back functioning, thanks to Sachi actually letting me know that they were not working. I am still not sure why some borders that are showing up in the side links in IE are not in FF. Overall things should start to be simpler and hopefully will get me more excited about updating the site with some fresh content. I am just not sure I have much to add to the general noise.

One Dead Hard Drive

maxtor_flames.gif

On Thursday I lost a 160GB Maxtor back to its maker, a pretty significant loss for me, all my personal files back a few months and most importantly the lost of many recent professional files. The loss makes me feel even stupider since I currently have 200GB drive on the new computer, sitting empty waiting for back up files that I never got around to doing. The drive was in an external case and was used to hold files from the old computer, then moved to the new computer 2 months ago and never transfered over to the new hard drive. A major and painful loss, the drive would not spin up at all, pointing to a power failure but the drive now sits at A1BestComputer in Lake City waiting a data recovery verdict. Please pray for my lost data.

Alien under my desk

computer.jpg

I am just going to do a preemtive NERD! off the bat. It has officially been a long time since I posted. A number of things have been taking up time and are more important/fun than posting here. But I did recently order my first attempt at building a computer.

  • ASPIRE X-Alien Black Case with 420W Power Supply
  • MSI "K8N Neo2 Platinum" NVIDIA nForce3 ULTRA Chipset Motherboard
  • AMD Athlon 64 3500+, 512K, L2 Cache
  • DP SYSTEMS Memory Dual Channel Kit 184-Pin 1GB (512MBx2) DDR PC-3200
  • Mitsumi USB Digital Card Reader/Writer W/FD
  • Seagate 200GB 7200RPM Barracuda 7200.7 SATA Hard Drive
  • NEC 16X Double Layer DVD±RW Drive, Black, Model ND-3500A
  • Dell UltraSharp 2001FP 20.1" Digital LCD

I went with AMD 64-bit processor, as opposed to all the current Intel's which use 32-bits, even though 32-bit Windows currently does not take advantage of it, these processors are still performing very well. For now I am going to go ahead and use the Radeon 9500pro card I have currently for a bit longer. I tried to buy a case that had what I wanted, namely space and 420w power supply, and I ended up with the Alien looking case, it is amazing how many cases there are out there and how stupid 98% of them look, but hey, now I will have blue lights on my computer, sweet!

I took for ever waiting for deals and prices to come down, and it finally started to take over to much of my life and I just bought it, then of course the price dropped by like $30 the next day, Que Sera Sera.

I am pretty excited about the 20" LCD but well see, I will try and review if I get a chance. I have never build one before so we'll see how it goes.

Added RSS feeds to the site

I have added a couple of RSS feeds (bottom left channel) from a couple of sites I like, one is from GameSpot (I actually prefer IGN), and is their latest game related news, and the other is from Cheap Ass Gamer, a site I am addicted too. I am not sure they are all that useful, especially since GAG does not update terribly often , but adding them was pretty easy with Infinite Penguins RSS Viewer v0.14b and a little php include.

procrastination posting

I have been at the computer at 8am and off the computer at 1am for the last 4 days, and this is oh so slowly turning into the slowest week of my life. I am not a late night person, and being a late night person makes me REALLY not a morning person. (Holly crap, Safari has spell checking as you type built in, I tell you this Mac OS X is really one slick product, the more I use the more I miss using the MAC exclusively) Anyway, I need some time away from the screen for awhile, may need to go away for a weekend, it seems like a long time since we have done that, maybe head out to Tim's cabin on the sound, and skip the aunts surprise b-day party, thought I will feel bad, we'll see. Ok enough putting it off, back to this damn UI layout.

802 22nd Avenue is a Crack House

Dear Seattle PD,

The house at 802 22nd Avenue, Seattle WA 98122 is full of crack dealers, and attracts prostitutes and drug users to my neighborhood. Recently they have moved in with the crazy man that rents the home from form the landlord, who I believe is Matthew F. Gardner of 3314 S Morgan St, Seattle, WA 98118. The dealer who lives there now has been dealing on this corner for years now so I assume that either you don't care or are in some way in on it. Any help is much appreciated.

Affect the effect

EFFECT

Synonyms: effect, consequence, result, outcome, upshot, sequel

These nouns denote an occurrence, situation, or condition that is caused by an antecedent. An effect is produced by the action of an agent or a cause and follows it in time: “Every cause produces more than one effect” (Herbert Spencer). A consequence has a less sharply definable relationship to its cause: “Servitude is at once the consequence of his crime and the punishment of his guilt” (John P. Curran). A result is viewed as the end product of the operation of the cause: “Judging from the results I have seen... I cannot say... that I agree with you” (William H. Mallock). An outcome more strongly implies finality and may suggest the operation of a cause over a relatively long period: The trial's outcome might have changed if the defendant had testified. An upshot is a decisive result, often of the nature of a climax: “The upshot of the matter... was that she showed both of them the door” (Robert Louis Stevenson). A sequel is a consequence that ensues after a lapse of time: “Our dreams are the sequel of our waking knowledge” (Ralph Waldo Emerson).

AFFECT

Synonyms: affect, 1influence, impress, 1touch, move, strike

These verbs mean to produce a mental or emotional effect. To affect is to act upon a person's emotions: Adverse criticism of the book didn't affect the author. Influence implies some control over the thinking, actions, and emotions of another: “Humanity is profoundly influenced by what you do” (Pope John Paul II). To impress is to produce a marked, often enduring effect: “The Tibetan landscape particularly impressed him” (Doris Kerns Quinn). Touch usually means to arouse a tender response: “The tributes [to the two deceased musicians] were fitting and touching” (Daniel Cariaga). Move suggests a profound emotional effect: The account of her experiences moved us to tears. Strike implies keenness or force of mental response: I was struck by the sudden change in his appearance.

Usage Note: Affect and effect have no senses in common. As a verb affect is most commonly used in the sense of “to influence” (how smoking affects health). Effect means “to bring about or execute”: layoffs designed to effect savings. Thus the sentence These measures may affect savings could imply that the measures may reduce savings that have already been realized, whereas These measures may effect savings implies that the measures will cause new savings to come about.

I cannot get this down for the life of me.

the wall that I built

This weekend I built a wall, between hostpital visits. I ended up using One and a Half Tons of rock, Basalt Glacier rock to be exact. One ton from Bedrock Stoneyard and a half a ton from Lake View Stone. The rock ended up costing about 19cents per .lb and I got around 1,500 pounds, in three trips to pick it up, and ended up builing a wall about 26" tall and 12.5' long, and used tumbled blue stone for the steps.

Quintuple Bypass Surgery

Shortly after we left my parents house after my birthday dinner on Saturday night my father suffered a heart attack. He and my mother were able to recognize the symptoms and went directly to the hospital at around 12pm. We found out via a phone on Sunday while we were downtown at the Rendezvous watching Pastor Kaleb's final show and went directly to Evergreen. At that time they were doing what I think was the angioplasty and running the tube into the heart to see how clogged they were, by shooting a dye though the arteries, and diagnose the problem. It turned out they were all between 70% and 90% blocked, and they decided to do bypass surgery in one day. Today was the surgery, a 5 hour process, and things seem to be ok, no complications as of yet, and we are just waiting for him to wake up and begin recovery. It was bound to happen, he has had high blood pressure and has battled with his weight, and it really is good that they recognized it an dealt with it in time.

The most striking thing about this process has really been how this type of family matter works into our daily lives. I guess I was not really sure how to react, with work, friends and extended family. There is a certain amount of fear and worry that you cannot deny, that effects you daily plan but also something like this is so sudden that you do not really have any plan for how to handle taking time off and who to do what and where. Not to mention being the youngest of 5 kids, by 16 years, makes me feel like a younger kick along than a real helper sometimes in situations like this. It sort of throws off any planning that you have for the week, and I don’t mean that cold heartedly, I guess it is just the old adage of how fast things can change so fast. From dinner Saturday night to having your heart pumped by a machine Tuesday morning.

CafePress Product/Process Review

Right before we left last week my order from cafepress arrived, and I wanted to report on the quality. I ordered a mug as shown above and a T for Isabella, and the quality is to be expected I think. I'd give it like a 4 of 5 stars if there was a scale, the mug is great, I have microwaved it and washed it and it seems to handle it all well, the physical mug is a tiny bit smaller than what I normally use but still adequate. The T is similar to a that type of iron on but not iron on if ya know what I mean, it has been washed 3 times and still looks fine, the process is similar it seems to some shirts we printed at Dino transfer recently, though that stuff was Enviro friendly, and I doubt this process is. Overall I think the Cafépress process is pretty cool, their prices are high enough that I will never make money off of it, but as a process of creating useful art it is pretty great.

UPDATE: I meant to say how much they jack you for shipping, another way they get their money (but Maygar did it for me), plus as a seller you cannot get any money from them until you rack up I think a minumum of $25 in profit, which at 1$ of profit per item is gonna take me.... oh about 10 years.

Back from the CO

I really do love Colorado, I want to move back at some point, it was such a short trip but I was able to go fly fishing twice, work in a Quarry cutting rocks (and I got to run the excavator (see above), which was totally firggin' awesome) and mend some horse fences, what a state, not to mention the great family easter fun. It amazes me how easy travel still is, we had no problem at all, as long as I took off my belt and shoes and ran them through the x-ray machine, though at one point a family behind us with a 3 or 4 year old got pretty irrate. The mom beeped and had to go to extra scanning, while the girl screemed for her frog toy that had to go through the x-ray machine, then the Dad beeped going thru as he still had his belt and shoes on and items in his pockets. Needless to say the girl ran thru the scanner and did not beep, but screemed for her toy while the mom looked out from her glassed in secondary screening booth and the Dad yelled at the NSA guy how rediculous the whoel thing was. My question was, why didn't you take 2 seconds to take off your belt and shoes and save us all the trouble, tough guy?

Open for business...

I have opened an online store thru CafePress, based on popular demand. I do not really have much control over the whole purchasing experience, so please forgive. The setup process was fairy painless, setup an account and upload your images to the specs, and then apply them to each of their items. The current account I have a free one, so there was no setup fee. To give you a idea of the cost they charge, each item is one dollar (1$) more that the price that CafePress charges for the item. I have ordered the Freedom Mug and Tiny Pants T-shirt for Isabella and will report back with the quality of the products. Let me know if you have any questions.

d'oh

[Homer] Of course not. But you know something? Sometimes you have to break the rules to free your heart.

[Marge] You got that from a movie poster.

[Homer] Well, when there's nothing left to believe in, believe in hope.

Sunday Rambling.

Easy weekend, did That's Amore, the Italian restaraunt up on the hill with Lee Sach and Scott, Isabella was really good for a long dinner, and the view is really great from the place, I left 2 pieces of margartia there though dang it, it was good. Cleaned up the downstairs, wne to tthe dump, redid the phone line and finished painting, going to call the carpet guy tomorrow and hopefully line that up for this week. That will be nice to get done, then I just need to finish some molding in the bedrooms and sand and paint the cieling in the laundery room and we will be good to go. Maybe list it for rent for March 1st... hmm I have not thought about that timing. Might have to list it now, I am kind of hopeing to get someone from church to rent it, that would be pretty comfortable but we will see. One thing for sure the open market will bring in more that Daniel I hope.

Daily Diary

Did some work on Lee's site, did nt do much for Val. day. Still not over, but neither K or I have had time to do much. Looking to move the couch out of the down stairs this weekend, and looking at getting carpet, still not sure if we really need it but I am leaning that way.

Me rant, why? dunno.

Posted this over at leelefever.com, thought fuck it frig it, why not post it here too.

I really think that for one the whole thing needs a new name, maybe I am just old fashion but I kind of cringe everytime I have to say to work blog, or explain to someone what a blog is. Does that make me old and toolish? Or worse yet a Marketer? I bet the kids say blog like I used to say Niggas With Attitude.

Now sites like Andrew Sullivan and InstaPundit are interesting because they are tied in, they are connected, they are smart and they are part of a crowd I am not. Sullivan, Renoylds, and... I'll use it too... ilk, are interesting because they enlighten me to something (more intimately mind you than TV, radio, or a cnn.com editorial, that has been edited by an editor) from their vastly different and somewhat enlightened position. Whether that is their physical postion, as in Washington D.C, or there vast knowledge, alledged or not, of the topics about which they discuss. They offer the goods from a slighter sounder foundation that Joe Bloginstien and do it often enough to make you feel left out if you miss a seventh post of the day until you check it the next day.

Getting over being sick rulz.

Getting over being sick is good, I look forward to my attitude toward work improving and and a better outlook in general. A week of having a cold really knocked my enthusiasm out of wack, I was not postive about much and most everything put me on edge, and I was not even all that sick, just a cold. Kistin did have me on and amino acid called NAC I think, and it may have hjelp kick this things ass in a little under a week which is good, even though I don;t tolotally trust all the pills she offers, some do give some good placebo I'll have to say.

So I did some work for Lee today hopefully that will roll along good and he will get something he can be excited about. I finally heard from Iklil and now I just have to wrap up the last 2 image galleries, and she will be paying me which I am happy about. I still need to get on the changes to Stephanies site, that has been waiting for a while, and I also really have to get back to Dan's boss at Marcus and Millichap that one has been like 2 weeks now that I have not called him back. And then ther is actual work, all the Tealeaf stuff, Airespace, and more.

These people are killer

movabletype.org : Donate

Dude, I'm sorry, but I fucking love these people, I am so happy to know that there are people out there like this:

"Before you pay, though, make sure you're actually going to use the product. Give yourself some time to get used to the system. See what others are doing with MT. And then, ask yourself what you think the system is worth."

January 23, 2003

Class, and music I want

So class today was pretty cool, I just wanted to write something before I got too busy with Friday EOD stuff, but I think I really appreciated the time to be back on a campus and hear discussion even if some people are way off base and annoying. I am glad Lee brought up the class, and glad that he tought enough to indroduce me to the process he is about to do. very cool, and I am excited. Going to dinner tonight with Dan and Alex at Cassis Bistro, never heard of it but Dan read a review.

PS I am on a quest ( btw I hate the fact that one of the largest phone companies in the country has taught me to mis-spell qwest, asshole branding person who came up with that can lick my nutz) now to find time to use my iPod, it is a bit hard for a father who works at home with his wife to have personal time to listen to music I think that having something like the iTrip will be nice.

And here is my current music I want to get list: (in no paticular order)
